Bill Clinton says 'Canada is right to be in Afghanistan'
Halifax — Canada is "absolutely" right to be fighting in Afghanistan, and the consequence of abandoning the war against the Taliban will turn out to be far more serious than the continued loss of Canadian lives if we stay, says Bill Clinton, the former United States President.
"I think your people have done an astounding job there," he said during a speech Wednesday night inside a hockey stadium in downtown Halifax.

Ben Stein of the American Spectator asks - Is Israel's response"disproportionate." ?
The Japanese bombed exactly zero U.S. cities except for a few stray bombs on Honolulu. The U.S. firebombed every city we could find and used the atom bomb on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Was this disproportionate? No, because the Japanese had started a world war and caused unspeakable suffering through Asia and the Pacific.

US Secretary of State Rice makes important visit to Lebanon
While it was only a very brief visit, the US Secretary of State's appearance in Beirut overnight was highly significant.
The US is crucial to finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Lebanon and now, for the first time since the fighting on the Lebanese-Israeli border erupted two weeks ago, a senior Bush administration official has travelled to the region.
Condoleezza Rice is now in Israel after making her surprise visit to Beirut. There she expressed her "deep concern" for the plight of civilians caught up in the fighting, a situation which British Prime Minister Tony Blair describes as a "catastrophe".
MICHAEL McCAFFERTY says :
Condoleezza Rice flew into Beirut on board a helicopter from Cyprus, her trip to the Lebanese capital kept secret until the last minute because of security concerns.
It's the first visit by the US Secretary of State to the region since the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel erupted two weeks ago, and it signals the US is stepping up its diplomatic efforts to search for a resolution to end the conflict.Dr Rice spent five hours in Beirut, praising Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora for his "courage" in the face of the violence, and also meeting the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, who's an ally of Hezbollah's leader.
My thoughts and heartfelt prayers are for peace ! I wish Secretary of State Rice succcess on her important mission.

Canada's Foreign Minister defends support for Israel
"A ceasefire and a return to the status quo is a victory for Hezbollah," said Canada's Foreign Minister Peter MacKay, answering questions about why Canada has not joined other countries in calling for a cessation to hostilities.
"Let's not forget that this was an unprovoked attack by a terrorist organization. Missiles were being fired into Israel. This is an attempt to defend a sovereign nation...This wasn't an impulsive move by Israel."

Israel is at war and America must support the State of Israel
NOW IS THE TIME FOR AMERICA'S LEADERSHIP.
“What can you do to help Israel?”
One of the best ways to help Israel right now is to ensure that the United States stands by her side. Let’s face it—without America, Israel is completely alone, and we cannot take America’s support for granted.
The American-Israel Political Action Committee is the one organization charged with ensuring that the U.S.-Israel alliance remains steadfast—especially at times like these.

Prime Minister Harper supports Israel
CTV NEWS copyright.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper blamed Hezbollah for the current crisis during remarks in France, a sentiment shared later by U.S. President George W. Bush.
"Hezbollah's objective is violence,'' Harper told reporters in France on Tuesday after meeting with Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin.
"Hezbollah believes that through violence it can bring about the destruction of Israel. Violence will not bring about the destruction of Israel. Violence will only bring about more violence. And inevitably the result of the violence will be the deaths primarily of innocent people.''
Harper has taken a pro-Israel position since the current crisis began on July 12.
Michael McCafferty says - Three cheers for Prime Minister Harper.
Right on.

John McCain supports Israel !
Greetings. I support Israel and want to share with you news about an excellent speech made by that great American hero John McCain. Respectfully, Michael
McCain Strongly Backs Israel's Right to Self-Defense
From today's St. Louis Post-Dispatch: JULY 16 2006
U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., gave strong support on Saturday to Israel's reaction to the capture of two of its soldiers, despite international criticism that the country's offensive against Islamic militants in Lebanon has been too harsh.
At a political fundraiser for Illinois state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka, the Republican nominee for governor of Illinois, McCain delivered gave a scathing condemnation of the Hezbollah guerrillas who made an incursion into Israel on Wednesday, seizing two soldiers and killing eight. In response, Israel began a massive bombing campaign of Lebanon's infrastructure.
"You have probably seen our European friends say, well, the Israelis have got to stop," said McCain, who was a prisoner of war in the Vietnam War.
"What would we do if somebody came across our borders and killed our soldiers and captured our soldiers? Do you think we would be exercising total restraint?"
The fighting between Israel and Hezbollah -- a conflagration that on Saturday threatened to develop into a regional war -- was only part of McCain's wide-ranging speech on foreign affairs.
McCain specifically called on Iran to stop its assistance of Hezbollah, which is also a declared political party in Lebanon's government. The group is also supported by Syria.
"Israel has neighbors on its borders that are bent on its extinction," McCain said. "This crisis is not going to be defused until Hezbollah is disarmed and Iran discontinues its sponsorship of Hezbollah."
McCain's speech at a luncheon in a golf course restaurant had started out as a gushing review of Topinka, punctuated by self-effacing humor and a little banter about Arizona, in the style of Garrison Keillor.
But the audience hushed as McCain turned serious. Noting the Group of Eight summit taking palce in Russia, he called on Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is hosting the meeting of the leading industrialized nations, to pressure Iran to stop backing Hezbollah.
McCain also denounced Hamas, the militant Palestinian group that controls the Palestinian Authority. Militants linked to Hamas kidnapped an Israeli soldier on June 25. That abduction resulted in an Israeli incursion into the Gaza Strip.
McCain didn't stop with the Israeli crisis; he dressed down North Korea for its saber-rattling and rocket tests earlier this month. McCain specifically singled out China -- now a tentative ally of the United States -- as needing to step in.
"The Chinese are really the only people who have any influence over this two-bit dictator (Kim Jong-Il)," McCain said. "The Chinese have to understand that there are repercussions for our relationship if they don't do the right thing."
McCain, who received a standing ovation from the crowd, said he also felt the need to comment the U.S. fighting in Iraq, criticizing Democrats who have advocated a troop withdrawal sooner rather than later….

Harper calls Canada an emerging energy super power.
Canada is an emerging "energy superpower" that's the most attractive investment opportunity in the world, Prime Minister Stephen Harper told a London business audience Friday.
On the eve of a G8 conference in St. Petersburg, Mr. Harper used his address to the Canada-U.K. Chamber of Commerce to establish Canada's bona fides on the oil and gas front.
Energy security is supposed to be one of the key themes as Russia, for the first time, plays host to the Group of Eight industrialized countries over the next three days.
MICHAEL McCAFFERTY COMMENTS:
I agree with Prime Minister Harper.
As a Canadian I am proud that we have such an outstanding and remarkable Prime Minister to represent Canada at the Group of Eight Summit.

Summer reading - New York Times 'best seller'
I love excellent books. Reading and owning good books is a passion with me. I especially love to read in summer time. Recently I bought a copy of the NEW YORK TIMES best seller 'Dispatches from the Edge' by Anderson Cooper of CNN.
In my opinion Canada's CBC News and CNN and BBC World News are the best sources for news both on the internet and TV.
Anderson Cooper is the host of his own news program on CNN.
The CNN correspondent describes a year of covering the tsunami in Sri Lanka, the war in Iraq and Hurricane Katrina.
I very much like and admire Anderson Cooper and highly recommend his book.
