Global warming report is serious wake up call !

Posted by Picasa Calling for "bold and decisive action," British Prime Minister Tony Blair has endorsed a new report that warns failure to act on climate change could trigger a worldwide economic slowdown along the same level as the Great Depression.

Written by former World Bank economist Sir Nicholas Stern at Blair's request, the 700-page report was released on Monday.

The report warns that unless the issue of climate change is immediately addressed, global economic growth could shrink by 20 per cent and cost the world economy close to $7 trillion US.

The report suggests other effects could include:

200 million new refugees as people are displaced by severe flooding or droughts.
Water shortages for one in six people.

A spike in world temperatures of up to 5 C.

Melting glaciers that could lead to water shortages.

The extinction of 20 to 40 per cent of wildlife species.

Prime Minister Harper is solid in support for Israel

Posted by Picasa TORONTO — Prime Minister Stephen Harper mounted a vigorous defence on Wednesday of his government’s Middle East policy.

Speaking to a B’nai Brith dinner, Harper made no apologies for his government siding with the Jewish state during this summer’s fighting between Israeli troops and Hezbollah guerrillas.

“When it comes to dealing with a war between Israel and a terrorist organization, this country and this government cannot and will never be neutral,” Harper said in a speech to the Jewish human rights group.

“This position is rooted in what we have long stood for as a country.”

British Conservative leader calls for 'social responsibility'

Conservative leader David Cameron has called for a new drive towards a social responsibility "revolution".
He said it was time for families, communities and individuals to "step up to the plate" and take responsibility to help build Britain.
At a speech during a visit to the Bhaktivedanta Manor Temple in Aldenham, Watford, he said:
"We need a Britain where we don't just ask what the Government can do but what people can do, what society can do - a Britain that starts realising we are all in this together - it is called social responsibility.

"My Father,My President" by Doro Bush Koch

Posted by Picasa Doro Koch Bush has written an absolutely wonderful book about her father former President George H.W. Bush -- My Father,My President.

George H.W. Bush is in my opinion a genuine American hero and statesman.

He is a good and decent man who brought honor and integrity to the White House. I admire President George H. W. Bush very much. That is why I really enoyed reading "My Father,My President" by Doro Koch Bush.

George H.W. Bush emerges from the pages of "My Father,My President" as a great American. A man worthy of admiration. It is my heartfelt hope that this wonderful book about former President Bush will do well in the bookstores because now more than ever America needs genuine heroes -- and the USA is blessed to have such a great elder statesman in former President Bush.

God bless former President Bush.

Prime Minister Harper says Liberal leadership candidates 'anti' Israel

Most of the candidates vying for the leadership of the Liberal party are anti-Israel, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said today as controversy swirled over comments by front-runner Michael Ignatieff.

Ignatieff's statement that Israel had perpetrated a war crime with its attack on Lebanon typified that sentiment, Harper said.

"This is consistent with the anti-Israeli position that has been taken by virtually all of the candidates for the Liberal leadership," he said.

"I don't think it's helpful or useful."

On Wednesday, Ignatieff's Toronto campaign co-chair, MP Susan Kadis, publicly renounced her support for him over the view that Israel's bombardment of the Lebanese city of Qana was a war crime.

US Navy carrier named after former President George H.W. Bush

Posted by Picasa Spraying the bubbles from sparkling wine across the enormous gray bow of the USS George H.W. Bush, the Bush family on Saturday christened the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier named after the 82-year-old former president.

"I know you join me in saying to our father, President Bush, your ship has come in," the current president said during a ceremony for the last of the Nimitz-class carriers, the CVN 77.

Canada leads on the 'world stage'

Posted by Picasa At the Francophonie Summit in Bucharest, Prime Minister Stephen Harper proposed an amendment to a resolution, later adopted by the Francophonie, which noted the suffering of both the Lebanese and Israeli civilian populations in this summer’s conflict.

Since taking office, Prime Minister Harper and Canada’s New Government have worked hard to return Canada to a leadership role in world affairs:

Canada is leading efforts to re-commit global support for the U.N-sanctioned and NATO-led mission to Afghanistan;

Canada moved quickly to suspend funding to the Hamas-led government of Palestine which does not recognize Israel’s right to exist;

Prime Minister Harper positioned Canada as an “emerging energy superpower” and force for stability to audiences in Britain and the United States;
and
Prime Minister Harper urged reform at the United Nations and challenged the member nations to live up to the ideals of the U.N. Charter.


Also at the Francophonie Summit, the Prime Minister urged all members to support the rapid reconstruction and stabilization of Lebanon and called for the Francophonie to take a leadership role on Darfur.

Canada is a nation that leads, not follows. Canada’s New Government will continue to demonstrate leadership on the world stage.

David Cameron is like JFK says John McCain

Posted by Picasa THE man who could be the next president of the US was in Bournemouth for the first day of the Conservative Party conference.

Republican senator and Vietnam veteran John McCain has in recent days likened David Cameron to President John F Kennedy.

Senator McCain praised Mr Cameron's "able and determined" leadership of the party.

He paid tribute to the "unity, confidence and principled sense of purpose that distinguishes British Conservatives under the leadership of my friend David Cameron".
