His Excellency: George Washington
I love to read. I especially love to read books about American presidents. The book "His Excellency:George Washington" by Joseph Ellis is truly a very excellent and remarkable biography of America's first president.
Over the past 40 years or more I have read countless biographies of American presidents and world leaders and this biography of George Washington is absolutely one of the best --
world class -- first class !

Steve Forbes says: Get the United Nations out of New York
It won't happen, but the U.S. should advocate relocating UN headquarters out of New York City. Where? A lot of cities would qualify, all having the common denominator of being in troubled, poor countries. The poverty and backwardness of Port-au-Prince, Haiti or Lagos, Nigeria or Dar es Salaam, Tanzania or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia would serve as daily reminders to UN diplomats of one of the reasons their organization was created-and in ways that New York never can. In Manhattan UN diplomats and bureaucrats inhabit a privileged, pampered, junket-oriented bubble, a contributing factor to the UN's years-long record of murderous failure and moral turpitude. No surprise that the UN is now trying to expand its NYC operations. The oil-for-food scandal, perhaps the biggest instance of corruption in history, allowed Saddam Hussein to siphon off tens of billions of dollars and direct it (after meeting his own needs) to favored countries, companies and individuals whose influence could help perpetuate his deadly dictatorship. The UN has long turned a blind eye to terrorism. It failed, miserably, to stop the 1994 genocide in Rwanda-militants of the dominant Hutu tribe literally hacked to death 800,000 members of the minority Tutsi tribe. On the eve of this mass murder, Kofi Annan, then head of UN peacekeeping efforts, pulled out half the UN's forces, thereby giving a tacit green light to the slaughter that followed. The UN's utter lack of principles is on constant display in the UN Human Rights Commission: One of its members is Sudan, whose Arab-dominated government is committing genocide against the black population in the Darfur region. Another outrage was the UN's recent attempt to influence our presidential election. A top UN bureaucrat manufactured the way-overhyped story about an alleged missing weapons cache in Iraq. The timing of this was no coincidence-it was payback for President Bush's violating UN sensibilities with regard to Iraq. UN failings are not new. Repotting it might not enable the UN to regain its moral bearings, but it's certainly worth a try.

Your Time is Up, Mr. Martin
TORONTO SUN
Editorial
Friday April 22,2005
Copyright 2005
Prime Minister Paul Martin spoke directly to Canadians last night. So now we're going to speak directly to him.
Mr. Martin, you and your corrupt Liberal party no longer get to tell us when the next federal election will be.
You and your corrupt Liberal party no longer get to portray your crisis as Canada's crisis.
You and your corrupt Liberal party no longer get to dictate to Canadians what issues they should care about.
So do us all a favour. Stop grovelling, stop apologizing and stop trying to tell us that your latest attempt to save your own political hide has anything to do with statesmanship.
Now you're promising that you won't call an election until a month after Judge John Gomery issues his final report on AdScam in December? Now it's important that Canadians know all the facts about AdScam before they go to the polls?
What about last year's election, Mr. Martin? You called that election three months before the Gomery inquiry held its first public hearing, over the objections of the opposition parties.
You did that after you shut down the public accounts committee on which your Liberal MPs at first tried to pin the blame for AdScam not where it belonged -- on your corrupt Liberal party -- but on Auditor General Sheila Fraser. They said she'd blown it all out of proportion. Why didn't you stop them then?
As for your argument that you created the Gomery inquiry, your own aides told the media at the time you didn't have a choice. It was either that or head into an election looking like you were trying to duck the issue -- political suicide.
Last night you called AdScam "an unjustifiable mess."
AdScam isn't a "mess," Mr. Martin. What it's looking like, more and more, is a criminal conspiracy by your corrupt Liberal party to launder public money for the private benefit of the Liberal party and its friends.
You say you didn't know what was going on, and now, finally, that you should have known. We agree. Another thing we no doubt agree on is that, even more than you, it should be Jean Chretien offering an apology today to the Canadian people.
You inherited the corrupt Liberal party you now lead.
He was the one in charge as that corruption spread.
He tried to justify AdScam by arguing that while millions of dollars might have been stolen, it was worth it in the struggle to keep Canada together. He is the one who will bear the ultimate responsibility if the sponsorship program, far from helping to keep Quebec in Confederation, ends up driving it away.
But since we are no doubt in agreement about Mr. Chretien, Mr. Martin, answer this: Why, on the day after his appearance before the Gomery inquiry, where he displayed such open contempt for the proceedings, did you lead the cheering and a standing ovation for him inside the Liberal caucus room?
And why should we believe that your party, if it wins a majority government in the next election, will implement Judge Gomery's recommendations? Canadians know from the Somalia inquiry, Mr. Martin, that that's not how Liberals work.

Sun Newspaper Backs Blair's Labour Party for May 5 Election
April 20 (Bloomberg) -- The U.K.'s biggest-selling newspaper, ``The Sun'' is backing Prime Minister Tony Blair's Labour party in the May 5 election, its Web site said.
``The die is already cast,'' said Trevor Kavanagh, the newspaper's political editor, in an interview broadcast by Sky News. ``It looks as if it's going to be another substantial Labour victory.''

An open letter to Stephen Harper by Norman Spector
Norman Spector is a distinguished Canadian. He has served as Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Canadian Ambassador to Israel,Editor of the Jerusalem Post and is a respected Canadian political commentator.
Norman Spector wrote an Open letter to Stephen Harper
in which Mr. Spector gives Stephen Harper the excellent advice and I quote:
"Ideally, you should await Mr. Justice John Gomery's report and recommendations; at minimum, you should not defeat the government until you've heard enough testimony to offer Canadians a credible plan and assure them that Adscam will never be repeated."
As a Canadian I would urge you to read
Norman Spector's Open Letter to Stephen Harper.
Let me know what you think.

Karl Rove --- my friend makes the TIME magazine list of the world's 100 most influential people.
My friend Karl Rove -- the Deputy Chief of Staff at the White House and Senior Adviser to President George W. Bush -- in a special issue of TIME magazine -- has been listed as one of the world's 100 most influential people.
I am delighted that my friend of over 30 years has been recognized and honored by being named by TIME as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Karl Rove and I first met in November of 1974 in Washington D.C. We were both 23. Karl was at that time National Chairman of the College Republicans. I was Executive Secretary of the Progressive Conservative Youth of Canada.
Right from the start I admired Karl Rove. He has proven that he is the 'most brilliant' political strategist in American history. Equally important is that Karl Rove is the loyal and trusted Senior Adviser to the President of the United States of America, George W. Bush.
Karl Rove is truly a great man -- a remarkable man -- and I am truly honored to call him my friend !

Bob Dole -- American hero !
Senator Bob Dole's new memoir, One Soldier's Story, is sure to become a classic. Senator Dole's outstanding new book chronicles how his depression-era childhood in Kansas, heroic World War II military service and painful recovery from wounds suffered during battle shaped his character.
Bob Dole is truly a great American, a remarkable statesman, and truly a real hero.

Canadian Liberal Member of Parliament may switch to Conservatives
Alberta Liberal Member of Parliament David Kilgour announced that he may defect to the Conservative Party out of "disgust".....
David Kilgour, who represents the Edmonton-Beaumont riding, told the Calgary Sun on Friday that he is already being courted by the Conservatives to switch sides.
He said he hasn't made a decision yet, but will decide soon.
“The Liberal party is seen as looking on the public trust as a vulture looks on a dying calf. Here we are, a G7 country, acting like a northern banana republic. What country is seen as more politically corrupt than us at the moment?” Kilgour said, speaking from Ottawa. ...
“If you draw up a thing to make people want to vomit, this is it,” Kilgour said about the details emerging from the sponsorship inquiry. “I have no desire for people to throw me out on my ear.”
David Kilgour has been my friend for over 25 years. He was first elected to Canada's Parliament in 1979. In my opinion David Kilgour is a man of great honor and integrity.
Here is a copy of an e-mail message I have sent to David.
