Prime Minister Harper speaks to the United Nations

UNITED NATIONS -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper used his first address before a United Nations summit Thursday to explain Canada's presence in Afghanistan, saying it was a global security imperative.

In a speech directed perhaps more at the Canadian public than the world leaders sitting before him, Harper said restoring peace in Afghanistan is vital to defeating international terrorism.

He tied Canada's national interests to global ones, evoking how UN Secretary General Kofi Annan had said the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks were a "direct attack" on UN core values such as the rule of law and pursuit of peace.

"That is why we in the United Nations have the responsibility to defeat terrorism," Harper told delegates of the UN's other 191 member states. "That is why, with unity and determination, the United Nations undertook its responsibility and its role in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan President Karzai says Canada is a model to the world for all that is good.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai spoke directly to the Canadian people Friday, thanking those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in his country and assuring Canadians that their efforts have made a dramatic difference.

Speaking in the House of Commons, President Karzai – who was greeted with standing ovations before and after his remarks – also praised Canada as a model to the rest of the world and extended his condolences to the family and friends of troops who have died working to ensure the security of his nation.

“It is a pleasure to be among friends in Canada today and to be visiting a great nation that is a model to the rest of us for all that is good,” he said.

President Karzai is right when he says Canada is a model to the world for all that is good.

Prime Minister Harper praises Canadian troops in Afghanistan in his nationwide television address.

OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper linked the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks with Canada’s controversial Afghanistan mission, praising Canadian "heroes" for standing up against the "menace of terror" in the deserts of Kandahar.

The connection between today’s hard-fought NATO military campaign in Afghanistan and the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on New York and the Pentagon that killed almost 3,000 people were underscored by the presence of the families of deployed Canadian soldiers and of the 24 Canadians killed in the World Trade Center, who flanked the prime minister as he spoke Monday in the Hall of Honor in the Center Block of Parliament Hill.

"Their presence here also reminds us that real people, Canadian men and women with families and children, are courageously putting themselves forward to make that part of the world a safer place," Harper said.

MICHAEL McCAFFERTY says: Canadians can be proud of the heroic courage of our troops in Afghanistan. My nephew is currently there with the Canadian Army. Prime Minister Harper spoke for most Canadians when he said these troops are "Canadian heroes".

September 11,2001 - 5 years later.

Five years ago I had the following letter published in major daily newspapers in the United States and Canada....

Right now there are tears in my eyes. I want to share with others my reflections on this horrible act of war on America. I want to pay tribute to those innocents who have died and to salute New York's "finest" -- the firefighters and police.

More than 40 years ago as a young boy I read a biography of Abraham Lincoln. His life inspired in me a life-long affinity for America and all that it stands for.

I love America, and believe it is the greatest republic in the history of the world.

The attack on America is one of the darkest moments in history. It stands there in monumental magnitude with the Civil War that Abraham Lincoln faced and with Pearl Harbor that Franklin Roosevelt faced. It is always darkest before the dawn and my heart and prayers go out to President Bush as he leads the free world at this tragic time in history.

Watching these events unfold on television, I feel a sense of being helpless, yet I have a firm confidence in leaders like President Bush. I believe Secretary of State Colin Powell when he says, "There will be a worldwide war on terrorism."

More Americans died on Tuesday than at Pearl Harbor in 1941. My heart goes out to all those American families who lost those they love. It is my prayer that they will not have died for nothing.

Abraham Lincoln in the immortal Gettysburg Address said: "...we resolve that these dead shall have not died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

I know Lincoln's words at Gettysburg will once again ring true. From Canada I say: God bless America!

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Senate Reform

OTTAWA — As the Conservative government tries to pass one bill limiting the terms of senators to eight years, it also plans to introduce another one to have them elected rather than appointed to the upper chamber.“The government, hopefully this fall, will introduce a bill in the House to create a process to choose elected Senators,” Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Thursday told a Senate committee.

New Brunswick votes on September 18

FREDERICTON (CP) - It hasn't been that long since Bernard Lord was touted as a possible prime minister, but now the New Brunswick premier is fighting to hold his place on the provincial stage.

Lord, 40, is heading into the last half of a tight election race with his two-term Progressive Conservative government facing a stiff challenge from an aggressive Liberal party under the leadership of 38-year-old Shawn Graham.

MICHAEL McCAFFERTY says: I hope Premier Bernard Lord is re-elected in New Brunswick. He is a remarkable and outstanding provincial premier and I do admire him.

I also believe that Premier Lord is still a bright young leader with a bright future ahead of him.

Premier Ralph Klein says 'good bye'

Premier Ralph Klein bid a teary farewell to the Alberta legislature on Thursday, marking one more stepping stone in the premier's long, slow journey towards retirement in the fall.

"It was very touching," Klein later told a press conference.

He added that "a long period is coming to an end -- 26 years in politics."
