CANADA DAY 2005

CANADA DAY 2005

STATEMENT BY THE PRIME MINISTER FOR CANADA DAY

Prime Minister Paul Martin made the following statement for Canada Day:

“Today we celebrate Canada’s 138th birthday. This is a time to reflect on the values we hold dear as a nation.

Already in 2005, we have witnessed events and anniversaries that remind us of these values and how they define us as Canadians.

We have honoured Canadian veterans during the 60th anniversary commemoration of VE Day for their tremendous sacrifice in preserving freedom and democracy. We’ve celebrated the 20th anniversary of equality rights in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. And we have joined Albertans and Saskatchewanians in the festivities surrounding the centenary of these two provinces.

Canada is a success story – and we take immense pride in that. A country bound together by values of family, community, respect for one another, and a commitment to equality of opportunity. Our future is bright.

Canada Day is a time to celebrate that success. One gigantic birthday party across the nation, as the summer begins and we relax in the company of family and friends – at the lake, traveling, camping, enjoying the warm summer days and evenings.

Let the celebration begin! To all Canadians – I wish you a very Happy Canada Day!”

In the Globe and Mail there is a very inspiring and patriotic article about Canada written by Lieutenant-Colonel Bob Chaloux who is in Sudan with the United Nations.

Lieutenant-Colonel Bob Chaloux truly expresses how beautiful and great a nation Canada is.

US Senator Chuck Hagel comments on war in Iraq

War in Iraq: Comments by US Senator Chuck Hagel

US Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) told the Nebraska American Legion that the US is losing the Iraq War for several reasons. According to the Omaha World-Herald, Hagel said the Bush Administration sent in "too few troops" to fight the war, terrorists are "pouring into" Iraq, "basic living standards are worse than a year ago in Iraq ... Allies aren't helping much .... [and] it will all plunge into another Vietnam debacle ... The point is, we're going to have to make some changes or we will lose, we will lose in Iraq."

michael mccafferty comments:

Chuck Hagel is not a Washington liberal. Senator Hagel served in Viet Nam and is a highly decorated veteran. Hagel is a conservative Republican and potential Presidential candidate for 2008. In other words one should take Senator Hagel's words seriously.

While I truly want President George W. Bush to succeed in Iraq it is my heartfelt hope that the Bush administration will pay heed to Senator Chuck Hagel.

Another book that shows Iran is a threat to America.

Countdown to Terror by United States Congressman Curt Weldon

Copyright
Countdown to Terror

Could the next September 11 be nuclear? This is no theory, says Congressman Curt Weldon, in his shocking new book Countdown to Terror. It is a fact as real as the arrest of Muslim terrorists who planned to crash a plane into the Seabrook nuclear power plant in New Hampshire in 2004. What’s even more stunning, Congressman Weldon tried to warn American intelligence about the attack—but no one in America’s intelligence community would listen. How did Congressman Weldon know about it? Because of a secret source, an intelligence contact code-named Ali who has been a treasure trove of reliable intelligence—intelligence that, despite Congressman Weldon’s strenuous efforts, has been routinely ignored by the CIA and the rest of America’s intelligence services. But in Countdown to Terror, Congressman Weldon lets you know what the CIA doesn’t want to know. You’ll learn, straight from Ali’s actual reports: · Why Iran will decide the next terror strike on America · How a major planned terror strike was called off because the terrorists thought it would help President Bush politically · Why Iran, not al Qaeda, is the command post of radical Islamic terror · Who is undercutting American efforts to create a peaceful, stable Iraq · Why Iran is like the Soviet Union in the 1980s: extremely dangerous, the iron glove behind all our enemies—yet on the verge of internal collapse · The Iranian nuclear program: red-hot and more advanced than you think Congressman Weldon’s sharing of vital intelligence with you, the reading public, is unprecedented. But it is necessary so that the American people can be informed and pressure our government to do what needs to be done to protect our country, fix our still broken intelligence services, and win the war on terrorism. Countdown to Terror is a frightening book—but it is all true. And if we act now, we can avoid its grimmest scenarios.

michael mccafferty comments:

Congressman Weldon has been in the U.S. Congress for over twenty years, and he is a ranking member of the of the Homeland Security Committee and an expert on international terrorism.

Countdown to Terror reveals what the CIA doesn't want you to know—that there is real and frightening evidence of an imminent terrorist attack on America, which the intelligence community has completely dismissed.

Could the next September 11 be nuclear? This is no theory, says Congressman Curt Weldon, in his shocking new book Countdown to Terror. It is a fact as real as the arrest of Muslim terrorists who planned to crash a plane into the Seabrook nuclear power plant in Massachusetts in 2004. Because of a secret source, an intelligence contact code—named Ali who has been a treasure trove of reliable intelligence—intelligence that, despite Congressman Weldon's strenuous efforts, has been routinely ignored by the CIA and the rest of America's intelligence services.

This is even more proof that Iran is a serious threat to America. I believe the leadership in the USA should take heed of Congressman Weldon's book.

Pat Buchanan - a truly great American patriot.

Pat Buchanan speaks out on Iraq

Copyright Pat Buchanan 2005

From President Bush's Axis of Evil speech in January 2002 to the invasion in March 2003, some of us argued vehemently and ceaselessly against going to war. We saw no connection between Saddam Hussein and 9-11. We saw no threat from a nation unable even to shoot down a single U.S. plane during 40,000 sorties in the previous decade. We warned that an occupation of Iraq would create our own Lebanon. And so it has. But we lost the debate of 2003. The warnings of opponents were brushed aside, and, with the Senate Democratic leadership behind him, Bush took us to war. Two years have now elapsed, and our leaders cannot even agree on whether we are winning or losing the war. Vice President Cheney dismisses the insurgency as in its "last throes." CIA Director Porter Goss says, "They're not quite in their last throes, but ... they're very close to it." Sen. Joe Biden says Goss should talk to "his intelligence people on the ground." Biden told CBS: "They didn't suggest at all that it was near its last throes. Matter of fact, it's getting worse, not better." John McCain says we face "a long hard slog. ... It's going to be at least a couple of more years." Sen. Chuck Hagel, a McCain backer in 2000, says: "Things aren't getting better. They're getting worse. ... The reality is that we're losing in Iraq." From these conflicting assessments, reports from Iraq and polls showing three in five Americans consider the war a mistake and want to begin bringing the troops home, some somber conclusions can be reached. We may not be losing the war, but U.S. policy is failing either to end the insurgency or to eradicate the insurgents. Yet, Bush appears unable or unwilling to escalate to win it, if that means adding troops to the 140,000 already there. But if escalation is not an option, and the present policy is not working, and U.S. support is weakening, we are in a hellish situation. For whether one opposed or supported the war, the president took us in. And, by now, the U.S. investment in blood, treasure, credibility and prestige is immense. As of today, there exists the possibility that that huge investment could be wiped out and America could suffer a reversal as grave as the loss of China to Stalin and Mao in 1949, or of Southeast Asia to communism in 1975. Is the president, is the country aware of the stakes involved and of the consequences of a failure in Iraq? If, following a U.S. withdrawal, the Baghdad government collapsed in the face of the insurgency, Iraq could split apart into a Kurdish north, a Shi'ite south and a radicalized Sunni center. Civil war could follow, with 2 million barrels a day of oil production taken off the world market in a matter of weeks. A U.S. strategic defeat in Iraq would have a traumatic effect on every ally in the Islamic world and would energize and embolden radicals and terrorists from Morocco to Mindanao to attack the remaining friends of this country and American interests across the Third World. At home, loss of Iraq would make Bush a failed president and ignite a quarrel as contentious and ugly as the "Who-Lost-China?" argument of the Truman-McCarthy era and the Vietnam debates of the Johnson and Nixon years, both of which poisoned our national politics for decades. Because he knows a failure in Iraq would be a disaster for U.S. Middle East policy and a fatal blow to his place in history, Bush is not going to lose this war. Which means that, even in the absence of visible progress in eradicating the insurgency, he will not withdraw U.S. troops, even should his party suffer serious reversals in 2006, with the war's unpopularity the central issue. Back in 1976, vice presidential nominee Bob Dole referred to World Wars I and II, Korea and Vietnam as "Democrat wars." Well, Iraq is "The Republicans' War." And as Democrats hold neither Congress nor the White House, they can support the war and the troops, while questioning the policy and the leadership. It is the Nixon option of 1968. But if fading support for the war and a shortage of available forces means Bush cannot escalate to win it, but cannot risk disaster by walking away from it, he is left with a "stay-the-course" strategy. That was the Johnson option of 1968. But if President Bush can neither escalate, nor cut his losses and get out, and his present policy is not working, what do we do? Bush needs to tell us where we are going, how long it will take, how much it will cost, what the prospects are of success, what the risks and costs of failure are, and what victory will look like. America needs answers now. Assurances will not longer do.

michael mccafferty comments:

Pat Buchanan is one of my very favorite conservatives. Pat Buchanan is a genuine American patriot and I very much respect and admire him.

The situation in Iraq is very serious and Pat Buchanan has written a very thoughtful and serious commentary.

This book is a serious wake up call to the USA.

The greatest threat facing America is Iran

In his chilling new book, New York Times bestselling author Kenneth R. Timmerman blows the lid off the greatest threat America faces: the Islamic Republic of Iran.Using his exclusive access to previously classified documents, Iranian defectors and officials, and high-level sources in the U.S. government and intelligence community, Timmerman blows the lid off previously unreported threats and our intelligence community’s failure to deal with these dangers. And now it could be too late.To get the complete story on Iran’s radical Islamic regime, Timmerman crisscrosses the globe, taking the reader into secret terrorist gatherings in Tehran, into tense meetings in the White House, to debriefings at an obscure CIA outpost in Azerbaijan, to diplomatic face-offs in the Kremlin, and to many other spots along the way. His extensive investigative reporting allows him to lay bare the true nature of the Iranian threat. For Americans interested in the truth about Iran, Countdown to Crisis may amount to a call for action–or even a case for war.

Praise “Ken Timmerman delivers another blockbuster, this time on Iran and its clandestine nuclear program. Few things are more relevant to today’s world than what happens in the Middle East—especially in Iran, a major player in the ‘axis of evil.’ Read this book, be warned, and then equip yourself for battle.” —Cal Thomas, nationally syndicated columnist“With so many amateur intelligence experts clouding the public dialogue, it is a pleasure to read the work of an author of real professionalism. Timmerman adds texture and clarity to the gross failures of our intelligence establishment and new visibility to the role of Iran in the Islamist war against America.” —John f. Lehman, 9/11 Commission member and former Secretary of the Navy

Billy Graham. Truly a great Christian leader.

Billy Graham's last crusade ?

New York crusade could be Billy Graham's last

Those close to the 86-year-old evangelist say this will be his last crusade

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- More than 100,000 people are expected to attend what might be the last crusade of the Rev. Billy Graham.

Graham, a Charlotte native, recently told The Associated Press that this week’s event in New York will almost certainly be his final one in the United States and probably his final one anywhere.

"In my mind, it is," the 86-year-old evangelist said. "I wouldn't like to say 'never.’ Never is a bad word."

The Rev. Billy Graham has been slowed considerably by advancing age and infirmities. The rally starts Friday and finishes up Sunday at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
The elder statesman of the evangelical movement has brought his simple but powerful message of salvation to more than 210 million people in 185 countries. Churches in London, where he made his first international splash a half-century ago, want him hold at least one more meeting there around his 87th birthday in November.

The odds of that? "I'd say a slight possibility," Graham said.

Billy's son Franklin -- his successor as leader of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association -- will stand by in New York as substitute preacher in case of emergency. But the elder Graham fully expects to speak for about 35 minutes at all three rallies, and to do so without sitting down.
The Rev. Billy Graham has brought his simple but powerful message of salvation to more than 210 million people in 185 countries. "When I stand up and touch that podium, the Holy Spirit comes, I believe, in power to help me,” he said. “If it weren't for that, I would not have attempted to do these three nights. I'm just totally dependent on the Lord and the prayers of thousands of people."
Even if there are no more mass meetings, Graham might still give occasional talks. But his pace has been slowed considerably by advancing age and infirmities. He spends most days at his mountainside home in Montreat, N.C., where wife Ruth is largely bedridden.
"When I reached about 80 my physical world turned upside down," Graham said.
The worst problem is hydrocephalus, or fluid on the brain, which is relieved by implanted shunts. But he also copes with Parkinsonism and prostate cancer, and he uses a walker because of a pelvic fracture last year.
“He generally uses a walker just for the sake of safety, because obviously a fall can have serious consequences,” said Preston Parrish of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. “But he really has been strengthened in an unusual way.”
Parrish said people have counted out Graham many times before.
“He takes things a day at a time and just tries to be faithful to the opportunities God puts in front of him a day at a time,” Parrish said. “That’s not a bad recipe for all of us.”
Ann McElroy, who is part of the First Baptist Church in uptown Charlotte, plans to travel to New York to attend the crusade.
“He’s not going to quit until the Lord tells him to quit, so he’s just going to keep going," she said. "This may be the last one. But if the Lord says, 'Do another,' he’ll do another.”

Billy Graham inspired and lead me to ask the Lord Jesus Christ to be my Savior. It was October 29 1995 and Billy Graham had a 1-day crusade in Saskatoon,Saskatchewan.

Billy Graham is truly one of the greatest Christians who has ever lived. Billy Graham has devoted his life to spreading the good news of the love of Jesus Christ and the Christian gospel.

I admire Billy Graham very much, and am proud of that fact that on the wall in my office is a framed color photograph of Billy Graham signed "To Michael McCafferty, God bless you always,
Billy Graham". I am proud of that very special memento from him.

God bless Billy Graham.

In praise of Father's Day

Father's Day

Father's Day was first celebrated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. Sonora Smart Dodd originally thought of the idea while listening to a Mother's Day sermon the previous year. Dodd and her five siblings were raised single handedly by their father, William Jackson Smart, after their mother died during childbirth in 1898. Her petition advocating a national father's day was supported by the local ministerial association and the Young Men's Christian Association.
By 1924, the idea of a national Father's Day was so popular that President Calvin Coolidge supported it. However, it was not until 1966 that a presidential proclamation declared that the third Sunday of June as Father's Day. This proclamation by President Lyndon Johnson was made permanent by President Richard Nixon in 1972.

Here in Canada we too honor our fathers on Father's Day.

michael mccafferty comments:

My father would have been 83 years old this month. He died at age 60 back in 1983. On Father's Day I miss my Dad. My Dad had a heart of gold and he loved his family very much.
Though my Dad was born in very poor and humble circumstances he rose above it all and
he and my Mom raised a family of seven children.

Dad was a good Roman Catholic man who had a good Irish sense of humor and he taught me and my brothers and sisters the importance of God and family.

On this Father's Day if your Dad is living let him know your love him and make him feel special
because my friend there will be a day when he isn't around for you to tell him.

Yes, I miss my Dad but I praise God that I was blessed by such a wonderful Father. He was truly an Irish gem.... God bless Francis McCafferty (1923-1983)

Abortion access has helped make society safer: Morgentaler

Henry Morgentaler said his fight to give women access to abortion has helped make society a safer place as he received a controversial honorary degree Thursday.
"By fighting for reproductive freedom, and making it possible, I have made a contribution to a safer and more caring society where people have a greater opportunity to realize their full potential," he said, shortly after receiving his honorary doctor of law degree from the University of Western Ontario in London.

michael mccafferty comments:

It really is a sad day for Canada when a major university grants an honorary degree to the abortionist baby killer Henry Morgentaler. It is truly a sad commentary that the liberal media would report this news as if it was wonderful.

Any country that accepts abortion is not teaching people to love, but to use violence to get what they want. That's why the greatest destroyer of peace is abortion.
- Mother Teresa (1910-1997)

That great pro-life American President Ronald Reagan once said : "I've noticed that everybody that is for abortion has already been born."

That saint Mother Theresa also said that to take the life of an unborn child is nothing short of murder.

Folks the truth is I believe Henry Morgentaler to be an evil man. Simple as that.

Civil liberties groups have condemned an arrangement between Microsoft and Chinese authorities to censor the internet.
The American company is helping censors remove "freedom" and "democracy" from the net in China with a software package that prevents bloggers from using these and other politically sensitive words on their websites.

The restrictions, which also include an automated denial of "human rights", are built into MSN Spaces, a blog service launched in China last month by Shanghai MSN Network Communications Technology, a venture in which Microsoft holds a 50% stake.

Canadian Conservative Party Leader Stephen Harper

National Post attacks Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper

Decision time for Stephen Harper

National Post

Copyright
Monday, June 13, 2005

In last year's federal election, we endorsed not only the Conservative party, but also the leadership of Stephen Harper. We called Mr. Harper's "stolid approach" to politics and campaigning an asset in scandal-plagued times, complimented him for constructing "by far the strongest political agenda articulated by the major parties" and declared him "the only political leader in Canada with a practical plan that would take this country forward rather than backward."
After that election, when he and his party failed to win, Mr. Harper surprised many observers by declaring he would take some time to contemplate his political future. We urged him to remain at the CPC's helm and expressed our confidence he would make the Conservatives a viable government-in-waiting as Canadians got to know him better.
We have had our differences with the Tory boss, to be sure -- most notably, when we wondered in print last fall whether Canada still had a "conservative" party, given Mr. Harper's endorsement of Liberal deals with the provinces on health care and transfer payments, and the party's failure to come out boldly in support of ballistic missile defence. (He grumpily shot back that Canada had a conservative party -- "what it lacks is a national conservative newspaper.") All in all, though, we have probably been as supportive of Mr. Harper as any mainstream newspaper in Canada. But even we must conclude that now may be a good time for the Tory leader to contemplate his future.
We are not calling on Mr. Harper to resign. But recent events have put into question whether he is the man who should be leading the Conservatives. In particular, the failure of the party to surge ahead of the Liberals in popular support, even as the government has been buried in scandal, and Mr. Harper's misplaced trust in Gurmant Grewal's claims regarding his jobs-for-votes tapes, suggest this is a good time for reflection.
If an election were coming in a month or two, there would be no question of Mr. Harper standing down. But the fact that there is unlikely to be an election until at least the fall means the party would have plenty of time to unite under a new leader before Canadians went to the polls.
Mr. Harper certainly deserves a lot of credit for his accomplishments. After he took over as leader of the Canadian Alliance, he moulded that fractious party into a unified whole, put a stop to the periodic bozo eruptions its MPs were prone to and cleared up its outstanding debt from the 2000 election. He then forged a merger with the Progressive Conservatives and reunited Canada's right -- a goal that had eluded his two predecessors.
In short order after the merger, he organized and won a leadership race that served largely to unite the two rival clans. Then he launched immediately into an election campaign that he nearly won. Since last year's national ballot, Mr. Harper has out-fundraised the Liberals, built a stronger national party structure, orchestrated a successful policy conference that filed off the roughest edges of his party's platform, worked hard at finding new local candidates and committed himself to building a base in Quebec -- a task he almost succeeded at earlier this spring when, for a time, the Conservatives appeared set to surpass the Liberals' support in that province.
Still, for all he has accomplished, we cannot say with confidence that Mr. Harper is the man to take the Conservatives to power. With all the Liberals' troubles, the Conservatives should be far ahead of the ruling party in the polls. They are not, and have not been, even at the height of the Gomery commission's revelations.
The problem lies not, as Red Tories would have us believe, with the party's socially conservative roots, or its alleged failure to create a "big tent." Mr. Harper has moderated the party's stance on the most contentious issues. Indeed, as his feeble postures on health care, missile defence and the Iraq war demonstrate, his party is, if anything, too similar to the Liberals.
Rather, we imagine the trouble lies with how the message is being delivered. Mr. Harper is a glum, moody figure who has shown little enthusiasm for the rituals of mass-media politics and for the simple glad-handing expected of party chiefs. And instead of hiring communications staff who make up for these weaknesses, he has hired glum, clannish people who reinforce them.
Mr. Harper should think long and hard this summer about how badly he wants his job. Is he prepared, or even able, to do the things necessary to win at retail politics? If the answer is yes, Mr. Harper should return this fall a man transformed. If it is no, then he should consider bowing out.

Amazon Books

Editorial Review

China has the world's most rapidly changing large economy, and according to Ted Fishman, it is forcing the world to change along with it. "No country has ever before made a better run at climbing every step of economic development all at once," he writes, in China, Inc.: How the Rise of the Next Superpower Challenges America and the World. China is currently the largest maker of toys, clothing, and consumer electronics, and is swiftly moving up the ladder in car production, computer manufacturing, biotechnology, aerospace, telecommunications, and other sectors thanks to low-cost, high-tech factories. China is also where the world is investing. In 2004, for instance, the city of Shanghai alone attracted over $12 billion in direct foreign investment, roughly the same amount as all of Indonesia and Mexico received. In tracing China's ascendancy over the past 30 years (with annual growth of an astonishing 9.5 percent), Fishman presents a flood of facts, figures, forecasts, and anecdotes and examines the implications of this unprecedented growth for China, the U.S., and the rest of the world.

Regardless of what you thought about Richard Nixon he was absolutely brilliant when it came to world affairs. Way back in the 1980s former president Nixon predicted the rise of China as a major world superpower. It is happening. China is on the verge of taking over the USA as the world's major superpower.

This book tells the whole story and it is shocking. I highly recommend it to you.

Editorial
Thursday, June 02, 2005

When is an offer not an offer? When is a private conversation not private? When is a transcript not a transcript? When is a defection really a sting operation? Or not? When is an independent ethics commissioner not independent? More than two weeks into the Gurmant Grewal tapes saga, Canadians still have far more questions than answers. And the one answer we do have, from Prime Minister Paul Martin, is merely an obfuscation, to put it kindly. It's time for somebody to pay for this disgraceful spectacle.
With more persistence than he generally shows on policy, Martin insists his Liberals did not make any offer to Grewal, a British Columbia Conservative MP. True, Martin's chief of staff and a top minister from B.C. did romance Grewal for hours, during the lead-up to that razor-close House of Commons vote on May 19. True, the main topic of those tedious hours of chat was the idea of Grewal and his wife, Nina, also an MP, crossing the floor or at least abstaining. True, Grewal was asking what would be in it for him.
The two Liberals, chief of staff Tim Murphy and Health Minister Ujjal Dosanjh, tap-danced on the very edge of a precipice. So, for that matter, did Grewal, who insists this was only a "sting" operation and who has previously indulged in similar adventures in recording.
So you decide: Is Martin telling the truth, that no offer was made? Consider this Dosanjh quotation from the transcript: "You have to be able to say that I did not make a deal. That's very important. That's why these kinds of deals are not made in that fashion."
He also reminded Grewal that when Scott Brison crossed the floor, in 2003, he came as a backbencher and was promoted to cabinet only later. (And which came first for Belinda Stronach, we wonder, Martin's offer of a cabinet post or her commitment to become a Liberal?)
Dosanjh's response has been to challenge the integrity of the translation from Punjabi, the completeness of the transcript, and so on. We have fallen to this in Canadian politics.
We have also fallen, apparently, to the point where the PM's chief of staff can undertake to have Ethics Commissioner Bernard Shapiro, who is supposed to report to Parliament, not Martin, write some kind of "interim report" clearing Grewal in an unrelated investigation about visas.
This stinks. It's worth recalling this was all a simple sub-plot in the multi-billion-dollar Liberal effort to save their grasp on power, and that their grasp is weakened because of the sponsorship scandal, and that in that great supermarket of stench this is just one more tiny sharp smell.
But this one touches the cabinet and the PMO, and that won't do. Murphy needs to resign, or be fired, and Dosanjh needs to leave the cabinet. The ethics commissioner - for whatever he can still be worth - should look into this. So should the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, although they have always proved to be ultra-cautious when it comes to political investigations.
And when the election finally comes, voters in both Vancouver South (Dosanjh's riding) and Newton-North Delta (Grewal's) should ask themselves, and the incumbents, some hard questions about integrity and transparency.

The Editors of the Montreal Gazette have published a very excellent editorial about the whole stink in Ottawa over the Gurmant Grewal tapes. It smells of Watergate.

The sad fact is that this rotten stink is the kind of stuff that turns off good and decent Canadians when it comes to politics.

I believe the real truth is that the cunning Conservative Mr. Gurmant went looking to the Liberals for a sweet deal and then chickened out but not before the Liberals Minister Dosanjh and Chief of Staff Tim Murphy played 'lets make a deal' with Gurmant. In other words both sides have got their hands dirty.

Yes, the whole matter sticks the high heavens and the time has come to clean up the mess in Ottawa. Canadians should accept nothing less.
