OTTAWA—U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins has warned Canadian politicians — Prime Minister Paul Martin in particular — to stop provoking his country by treating it as a political football in the election campaign.

"I get election-year politics. I understand political expediency. But the last time I looked, the United States was not on the ballot for the Jan. 23 election," Wilkins declared in a major speech in Ottawa yesterday.

Michael McCafferty comments:

I believe that one does not have to attack our good friend and neighbor the United States in order to show they are truly a Canadian patriot. There are more positive ways to show our love of Canada.

United States Ambassador David Wilkins has clearly expressed the concerns of the USA in saying that it is time to stop provoking his country by treating it as a political football in the election campaign.
