'High turnout' in Iraqi election

Voters had to dip their finger in ink to guard against multiple votingIraqis have voted in large numbers for their first full-term government since the US-led invasion in 2003.

Voting was extended by an hour in some areas because of the high turnout, Iraq's election commission said.

This is a moral victory for freedom and democracy and a great day for the Iraqi people. At the White House, President Bush called the election a "major milestone in the march to democracy." He congratulated Iraqis for "defying the terrorists and refusing to be cowed into not voting."

The Iraqi election is a giant step in nationhood for the Iraqi people.
