I have cancer

Back, in July I went to the hospital for a colonoscopy. I had been having blood in my stools. To make a long story short the doctor told me I have colon cancer.

In August Dr. Malik performed surgery on my colon and removed the cancer. Unfortunately it had in the meantime spread to my liver. The cancer is very advanced into my liver (level 4).

Since November I have been receiving chemotheraphy treatments at the Allen Blair Cancer Clinic here in Regina,Saskatchewan. The plan is for me to have chemo treatments until June and if at that time the tumors in my liver are really reduced in size then I will be sent to Edmonton,Alberta for surgery by a liver cancer surgeon.

The obvious question is -- what if it is not possible for me to have the surgery ? Then my life span is going to be reduced dramatically.

At first I was very afraid but in recent weeks my faith in God and the love of family and friends
have been very encouraging to me. Simply stated: I am not afraid to die.

It is my heartfelt hope that you will pray for me. Please pray for me that God will give me the courage and strength to face all of this with courage and dignity.

I am proud to be an Honorary Citizen of the States of New Hampshire and Montana and an honorary Colonel and Aide de Camp to the Governor of New Mexico.

There were McCaffertys who fought for the Union in the American Civil War and I am proud of my family ties to America.

My son Nicholas whom I love very much gave his Dad "The Reagan Diaries" for Father's Day. Nick knows that Ronald Reagan is my all time hero.

On Father's Day I got to reflect on how blessed I am that I have two absolutely wonderful adult children - Nicholas and Sarah.

I also reflected on the memory of my own Dad Frank McCafferty (1923-1983) who was truly a loving father.

I am very pleased that the "Reagan Diaries' are number # 1 on the NEW YORK TIMES best seller list for non-fiction books. Right on !

Presidents honor Billy Graham at library dedication

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - For almost an hour and a half Thursday, he sat silently in his cushioned, throne-like chair, looking like a white-maned monarch as a trio of former presidents came forward to trumpet his lasting impact on the country and the world.

But when it was Billy Graham’s turn to address the crowd spread out under a long white tent, he approached the podium with a walker and then spoke with humility - and humor.

‘‘I feel like I’ve been attending my own funeral,’’ he said, drawing the biggest laugh of the day.

The 1,500 guests had come to Graham’s hometown of Charlotte not to mourn the world-famous evangelist, but to help him dedicate the $27 million Billy Graham Library.

Though it’s filled with memorabilia from a life in which he rubbed shoulders with real kings and 11 U.S. presidents, Graham said he hopes the museum will mostly continue his 60-year crusade to bring people to Jesus Christ.

‘‘This building behind me is a tool for the Gospel,’’ preached Graham, 88, his voice weakened by age and illness. ‘‘I pray that God will use (it) and speak to the many people who come through this facility.’’

Graham’s words ended a ceremony that was part media event, part Graham family reunion and part Christian equivalent of a presidential library opening.

A fleet of TV satellite trucks hogged the parking lot at the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, while correspondents from ABC, NBC, Time magazine, and the Christian Broadcasting Network worked the event.

Some 85 members of the Graham family showed up and his professional family was there, too.
Nearing 100 years old and relying on a cane, George Beverly Shea belted out in baritone the hymn - ‘‘How Great Thou Art’’ - he’s sung at Graham crusades since 1947, when they held one at the Charlotte Armory.

On Thursday, the 1,500 invitees sang along with him on the chorus.

Other than Graham himself, the biggest attraction were ex-Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.

Though they all have their own libraries and aren’t used to playing supporting roles, the three former chief executives were alternately insightful, funny, even emotional.

Jerry Falwell was truly a good and decent man. A true Christian leader. In 1988 at a lunch in Washington DC I had the honor to meet Jerry Falwell and have my photograph taken with him.

Today is a sad day for me because Christians have lost a good man but I know he has gone to Heaven to be with the Lord. Jerry Falwell truly loved Jesus.

50 years ago the Queen made her first visit as Queen to the USA.

I very much admire Her Majesty. At 81 years of age she is a source of inspiration and represents noble ideals.

The death of six soldiers rocks Oromocto

Oromocto, N.B. -- The small town of Oromocto, N.B. was rocked Sunday with news that five of the six soldiers killed in the deadliest day for Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan hailed from the nearby Gagetown military base.

Rome -- Soon after he died two years ago, Pope John Paul II was practically declared a saint by vox populi. Banners demanding "Santo Subito!" (Sainthood Now!) crowned the crowds of people who filled St. Peter's Square to mourn the late pontiff.

Monday, on the second anniversary of his death, John Paul will take a significant step closer to likely sainthood.

Church officials will announce the conclusion of a detailed investigation into the Polish prelate's life, and the Vatican will begin evaluating the case of a French nun who said she was miraculously healed after praying to John Paul.

The nun, Marie Simon-Pierre, is expected to be among thousands of pilgrims who will attend elaborate ceremonies today, including a solemn Mass at St. Peter's to mark the late pope's passing. She says her Parkinson's disease, the same illness that afflicted John Paul, disappeared two months after he died.

The senator's expected campaign kickoff is scheduled for Feb. 10 in Lincoln's hometown of Springfield, Ill. _ where both men served in the state legislature.

Americans throught the country are reflecting today on Martin Luther King's legacy of racial equality and peace.

Yesterday, the eldest daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King evoked the civil rights movement while reminding those remembering her parents that America has not yet reached the promised land of peace and racial equality.

"We must keep reaching across the table and, in the tradition of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, feed each other," Yolanda King said Sunday at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Today's holiday comes on the day Martin Luther King, Jr. would have turned 78.

I had the personal honor of meeting President Gerald Ford twice in my life. Once briefly at the White House in November of 1974 and then in Regina, Saskatchewan at a dinner in honor of President Ford on September 10 1981 at the Hotel Saskatchewan in Regina.

I also was present at the Republican leadership Dinner on March 7 1975 in Washington DC when President Ford was the guest speaker and I attended a breakfast in honor of President Ford at the 1984 Republican convention in Dallas Texas.

I will treasure the signed book and photographs I have of President Gerald Ford.

Gerald Ford was truly a great American statesman. He brought great honor and integrity to the White House and will go down in history as a really good and decent American president.

In what could be their last gathering to remember the 1941 attacks on Pearl Harbor, a dwindling group of aging survivors laid wreaths under life preserver rings to honour their ships Thursday in Hawaii.At precisely 7:55 a.m., the nearly 500 survivors bowed their heads. Sixty-five years ago to the minute, planes began bombing the harbour, ushering the United States into the Second World War.

The world must never forget the day that will live in infamy. Hundreds of young Americans lost their lives at this surprise attack that woke up 'the sleeping giant' -- the USA.

The godparents of my daughter were young children at homes in little towns in New Hampshire and Indiana when they heard the news on the radio. They have told me it was
so very shocking -- but at the end of the day freedom and democracy won.

Baker and Hamilton Iraq Report urges major changes

WASHINGTON, Dec. 6 — A bipartisan commission warned on Wednesday that “the situation in Iraq is grave and deteriorating,” and handed President Bush both a rebuke of his current strategy and a detailed blueprint for a fundamentally different approach, including the pullback of all American combat brigades over the next 15 months.

Sad news. Our cat Cody is blind.

Recently we took our cat Cody to the vet -- and we got really sad news.
Cody is blind.

Cody is one of God's special creatures and we love him very much. Cody is 19 years old -- and the vet said that aside from being blind Cody is in excellent shape for a senior cat. We told him we love Cody so much that we will pamper him and take excellent care of him right up until he passes away. The vet said he appreciated how much we love our cat. Yes Cody the cat is very special to me and my family. It was 19 years ago this fall that we took our little Nicholas and Sarah to the Humane Society to pick out a kitten.
I spotted Cody and it was love at first sight. He has always been a very adorable and loving cat. Thank you for letting me share my feelings with you about my wonderful cat Cody who now is blind.

Yesterday Americans voted for change. Real change !

The Democrats at this point in time have won the Senate 51-49. Just as I had predicted.

The Democrats picked up 28 new seats in the House of Representatives -- 4 less than the 32 I predicted. But sure was close. As a result there is now a Democratic majority in Congress.

As far as Governors, I had predicted 8 new Democrats. They picked up 6. Again I was close.

It will be absolutely amazing to see what happens next in American politics. We live in very interesting times.

For the past 40 years I have followed American politics with a passion -- and I have read many books about American politics. I am willing to stick my neck out and make some predictions on the US Elections.

I believe there are several forces at work that will make this a 'big' win for the Democrats.

1. The Democrats are really energized. They can taste victory.
2. The high anxiety about the war in Iraq.
3. The deep 'unpopularity' of George W. Bush.
4. The Christian conservative vote is going to stay at home by the thousands.

Put all of that into the mix and here are my predictions:

UNITED STATES SENATE 51 Democrats and 49 Republicans.
The Democrats take the Senate.

THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. A 32 seat gain for the Democrats to give them a solid majority.

GOVERNORS 8 new Democratic Governors. A majority of state governors will now be Democrats.

So there you have it folks. Check back on Wednesday to see how close I came in my predictions.

Calling for "bold and decisive action," British Prime Minister Tony Blair has endorsed a new report that warns failure to act on climate change could trigger a worldwide economic slowdown along the same level as the Great Depression.

Written by former World Bank economist Sir Nicholas Stern at Blair's request, the 700-page report was released on Monday.

The report warns that unless the issue of climate change is immediately addressed, global economic growth could shrink by 20 per cent and cost the world economy close to $7 trillion US.

The report suggests other effects could include:

200 million new refugees as people are displaced by severe flooding or droughts.
Water shortages for one in six people.

A spike in world temperatures of up to 5 C.

Melting glaciers that could lead to water shortages.

The extinction of 20 to 40 per cent of wildlife species.

At the Francophonie Summit in Bucharest, Prime Minister Stephen Harper proposed an amendment to a resolution, later adopted by the Francophonie, which noted the suffering of both the Lebanese and Israeli civilian populations in this summer’s conflict.

Since taking office, Prime Minister Harper and Canada’s New Government have worked hard to return Canada to a leadership role in world affairs:

Right now there are tears in my eyes. I want to share with others my reflections on this horrible act of war on America. I want to pay tribute to those innocents who have died and to salute New York's "finest" -- the firefighters and police.

More than 40 years ago as a young boy I read a biography of Abraham Lincoln. His life inspired in me a life-long affinity for America and all that it stands for.

I love America, and believe it is the greatest republic in the history of the world.

The attack on America is one of the darkest moments in history. Watching these events unfold on television, I feel a sense of being helpless, yet I have a firm confidence in leaders like President Bush. I believe Secretary of State Colin Powell when he says, "There will be a worldwide war on terrorism."

More Americans died on Tuesday than at Pearl Harbor in 1941. My heart goes out to all those American families who lost those they love. It is my prayer that they will not have died for nothing.

Abraham Lincoln in the immortal Gettysburg Address said: "...we resolve that these dead shall have not died in vain -- that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom -- and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth."

US Senator Joe Lieberman ahead in major poll

The latest Quinnipiac University poll, conducted between August 10-14, shows Lieberman leads Democrat Ned Lamont, a wealthy businessman with little political experience who has played on anti-war sentiment, by 53 percent to 41 percent among likely voters in November's election. The Republican candidate Alan Schlesinger drew 4 percent, the poll shows.

Democratic voters selected Lamont as their candidate on August 8 with 52 percent of the vote after an increasingly bitter race dominated by Lieberman's support for the Iraq war.

Lieberman vowed to stay in the race as an independent candidate in order to face Lamont and Schlesinger in the general election in November.

President Bill Clinton paid tribute Tuesday to Stephen Lewis, the UN special envoy on AIDS, and all the others who have joined in the battle against HIV/AIDS around the world.

In a moving address to the International AIDS Conference, Clinton said the world and the people at the conference owe Lewis a debt of gratitude for his passion and no-nonsense approach.

"I always love sharing the stage with Stephen Lewis, although he is a hard act to follow," Clinton said after Lewis eloquently introduced him. "I thank him for a lifetime of public service."

Most of the strategies that allow people infected with HIV in the developed world to live productive lives can work in poor countries as well, the International AIDS conference in Toronto was told on Monday.

Bill Clinton, the former U.S. president, and philanthropist Bill Gates made the point while outlining their priorities to end the epidemic. Both talked about successes, and the challenges, of bringing antiretroviral therapies to people in developing countries.

"It's a breathtaking human tragedy," that most people in rich countries who are infected with HIV live, while those in poor countries die, Clinton told the conference. "It's unacceptable."

Japan marks 61st anniversary of Hiroshima

HIROSHIMA, Japan — The mayor of Hiroshima on Sunday called for the elimination of all nuclear weapons as he marked the 61st anniversary of the world's first atomic bomb attack, which killed more than 140,000 people in the Japanese city.

Expressing concerns over the global proliferation of nuclear weapons, Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba urged the government of Japan — the only nation to suffer atomic bomb attacks — to take a leading role in the effort to eliminate nuclear arsenals.

"Sixty-one years have passed since radiation, heat rays and an atomic blast created hell on earth," Akiba said in a speech at Hiroshima Peace Park, near the bomb's epicenter. "But the number of nations enamored of evil and enslaved by nuclear arms has increased. The only role nuclear weapons have is to be demolished."

A bell rang at 8:15 a.m., marking the time when the American B-29 bomber Enola Gay dropped its deadly payload on Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945. It was the first atomic bomb ever used in war.

CORNWALL, Ont. (CP) - Prime Minister Harper says his policy on the Middle East won't change because of polls and protests.

Speaking in Cornwall after a party caucus meeting, the prime minister said any ceasefire in Lebanon must be permanent and lasting.

Harper said Canadians are not neutral on terrorist groups and they want the government to work with the international community to develop a strong position that can lead to a durable and lasting peace.

He said conditions have to be in place to make a ceasefire possible and stable.
And that isn't going to happen as long as there is a terrorist organization that's initiating violence and won't cease its attacks.

OTTAWA (CP) - Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay struck back at critics Tuesday, calling Hezbollah a cancer-like group of "cold-blooded killers" that provoked the chaos and carnage in the Middle East.

There can be no peace in the region until the militant group and Israel agree to uphold a lasting ceasefire with clear conditions, he told a packed special meeting of the Commons foreign affairs committee. "This has to be a lasting peace," he said. "It cannot be simply a temporary solution to allow for the rearmament of the terrorist body and simply begin the violence again."

MacKay repeatedly expressed dismay over the deaths of hundreds of Lebanese civilians - many of them children - in retaliatory Israeli airstrikes.

"Lebanon's being held hostage by Hezbollah," he said, noting the group was declared a terrorist body by a former Liberal government.

He called Hezbollah "a cancer on Lebanon" that's destroying democracy and stability in the country.

MacKay cast the situation as a no-brainer choice to support a democratic nation - Israel - as it defends itself against unprovoked attacks by Hezbollah, "a group of
cold-blooded killers."

While it was only a very brief visit, the US Secretary of State's appearance in Beirut overnight was highly significant.

The US is crucial to finding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Lebanon and now, for the first time since the fighting on the Lebanese-Israeli border erupted two weeks ago, a senior Bush administration official has travelled to the region.

Condoleezza Rice is now in Israel after making her surprise visit to Beirut.There she expressed her "deep concern" for the plight of civilians caught up in the fighting, a situation which British Prime Minister Tony Blair describes as a "catastrophe".

Condoleezza Rice flew into Beirut on board a helicopter from Cyprus, her trip to the Lebanese capital kept secret until the last minute because of security concerns.

It's the first visit by the US Secretary of State to the region since the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel erupted two weeks ago, and it signals the US is stepping up its diplomatic efforts to search for a resolution to end the conflict.Dr Rice spent five hours in Beirut, praising Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora for his "courage" in the face of the violence, and also meeting the Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, who's an ally of Hezbollah's leader.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper blamed Hezbollah for the current crisis during remarks in France, a sentiment shared later by U.S. President George W. Bush.
"Hezbollah's objective is violence,'' Harper told reporters in France on Tuesday after meeting with Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin.

"Hezbollah believes that through violence it can bring about the destruction of Israel. Violence will not bring about the destruction of Israel. Violence will only bring about more violence. And inevitably the result of the violence will be the deaths primarily of innocent people.''

Harper has taken a pro-Israel position since the current crisis began on July 12.
